Timothy's page on the Borderlands wiki is lacking information, so I'll provide a brief summary myself.

Now, we don't know a whole lot about his backstory, but what we do know is that Timothy originally hails from one of the Eden planets, where he lived with his mother. He went to college, where he got a degree in Creative Writing, as well a whole lot of debt due to student loans. To pay these off, he took on a job as a body double for Jack, who at the time was just a programmer. This involved completely altering his appearance and voice to match Jack, a process that he... may not have completely consented to. And which isn't reversible. Furthermore, Timothy Lawrence is now officially dead and erased, so his original identity simply doesn't exist anymore.

Not long after the procedure was completed, Timothy was called to Elpis, along with the other playable Vault Hunters. Which is where the game begins, of course.

...Like I said. We don't really know a lot about the guy.

Personality: So right off the bat, Timothy's very unlike all the other playable characters in Borderlands. Because he's very... normal. He's not a battle-hardened warrior, bounty hunter, or assassin, or a robot programmed for this. He's just a normal guy looking for a job to pay off his student loans. Because of this, his attitude throughout the game is very different than that of the others, as he's constantly in fear of everything. After all, he didn't sign up for people shooting at him, weird freaky aliens, and giant death lasers. And all the heights. Oh god, the heights. The poor guy screams every time he has to use a jump pad. Throughout the game, he keeps expressing his desire to just go home.

Even when not in mortal danger, though, Timothy's pretty nervous. He's easily intimidated and also just kind of an awkward mess. Unlike Jack, who's very confident and self assured, Tim always sounds kind of unsure about himself. The best he can do is faking Jack's confidence, which he's not... super good at. Actually, he's not super great at imitating Jack in general, often putting on a super forced Jack act which he only makes less convincing by adding stuff such as "I'm Jack" at the end of a sentence. Oh Tim. He's also very much not suave, as the awkwardness increasing tenfold when he's around a pretty woman. Put him around Moxxi and he can barely even get out full sentences anymore. So yeah, a ladies man he's not. Or a peoples' man.

Despite being so much of a mess, Timothy actually holds up surprisingly well during his adventures on Elpis. Maybe not so much emotionally, okay, but he makes it through the entire game alive and in one piece. He's spineless and very much aware of it, and just not super into violence, but he's much braver than he gives himself credit for. Sure, he doesn't have much of a choice, but he still manages to find the strength to get through the whole game, rather than just finding a place to hide on Elpis and hope Jack fixes everything himself somehow. Not to mention that surviving Elpis means he's killed a lot of really powerful people and given his lack of combat experience, that's quite impressive. Got to give him credit for adapting as well as he did.

Emotionally... Well. For a good chunk of the game, Timothy's pretty okay going along with Jack. He's not the guy's biggest fan, far from it. But mostly he just thinks Jack's a bit of a douche with an ego. Once it becomes clear what Jack's really like, though, he goes from nervous yet cooperative, to very... bitter. He's in over his head and he knows it from the start, but he gets more resentful about it the more everything goes to hell. This change happens gradually through the game, but becomes a whole lot more obvious after Jack spaces the Hyperion scientists. He expresses his dislike for Jack more and more towards the end, calling him a psychopath under his breath and just making it very clear he's not on board with what's going on anymore, even though he still has to go along with it.

Tim and Jack are really just... so different. Where Jack sees himself as a hero, yet is anything but, Tim doesn't consider himself anything impressive and yet... He's definitely waaaaay more moral than Jack, actually being horrified at the deaths of innocent people. And also just... death in general. You get used to it to an extent in Pandora's part of the galaxy, but he's much less okay with all the violence. Like, hey, maybe killing someone because they're a dick is kind of ridiculous? Maybe if you want to start a relationship with someone don't send someone over there to try and kill them? Hey, maybe let's not kill this injured soldier who's surrendering? That last example is probably the most interesting one, as it actually gets Tim to tell off Jack with a simple, yet very effective line; "I'm not you, Jack".

And he really, really isn't. Hell, you could say that Tim is the type of hero Jack pretends to be, it's just that he doesn't see himself like that. Or, well, he has the potential to be, anyway. Though he doesn't agree with all the morally questionable actions Jack takes and downright despises the guy at the end, Timothy just... doesn't have the courage to really stand up to him, in a truly meaningful way. He's simply too scared and you can't really blame him, considering the type of person Jack is. He hates it, but what are you gonna do, right?

Honestly, Timothy is probably one of the nicest player characters there is. Not into murder, generally not very rude. There's the bitterness, sure, but that's more towards his awful circumstances and Jack than anything else, he's not the type to take that out on anyone. He's friendly and very much a dork, who loves books and cats. Just a normal guy. Who had his life kind of completely ruined by Jack.

Victory Road Sample: [There's no video for this broadcast, just audio. Well. There's background noise, anyway, for a few seconds. Then someone awkwardly clears his throat.]

Um, is this... working? [Huh, funny. Isn't that voice kind of familiar? The tone's off, but the sound of it's definitely the same as that Jack guy, right?] How... How do I know if...

Oh! Wait, the light's on, that probably means people are listening and... hearing me talk like an idiot! Great. Cool.

[...He quickly clears his throat. Right, yeah, let's not keep talking to himself like a moron, that's no way to make a first impression.]

I mean. Hello there, youuuuu, ah, lovely people. This is... Jack. Handsome Jack! That's me. In the flesh. I mean, not that you can see that, but--

Just. Just got a quick question.

Mainly... Wait, crap, let me turn on the video for this. [And then the video feed suddenly switches on, aimed right at a very excited looking Ditto, who smiled excitedly at the camera.] Okay, so, what the hell is that? I mean, all these other animals around here seem all messed up, but they're still, y'know, animals. This is just... I don't even know. Someone used some jello for a science class and something went wrong or whatever.

I don't really know what to do with it. Do I, like... feed it? Does it eat? It doesn't look like it eats, but uh. Don't wanna kill it by mistake.

But yeah, if one of you could give me some tips about this... whatever it is, that'd be really awesome, um... babes? God, that's terrible, why did I say that.
